In Marcel Proust’s “Search of Lost Time” we are all lead through his insight into the process of memory via his recollection of the Madeline cake soaked in tea. This became the starting point for my investigation into digital versus actual memory.
The ubiquitous nature of the digital camera and the ease of publishing and sharing these digital snapshots of our lives make it increasingly difficult to edit the physical representation of ourselves in the context of memories past.
The scenario demonstrates a Personal Editing Tool. Should the user detonate the trigger the previous 15 min of their digital data will be erased forever leaving their mind to create a memory better suited to psychological well-being.
I don’t believe that this kind of tool should ever need to exist; it merely serves as a device to highlight the need for personal agency in future digital recording systems.
